Early last week Apple officially released iOS 16.4, and in doing so introduced 31 new emojis to its devices' emoji keyboards. Yes, the plain 🩷 Pink Heart is now finally on iPhones, as is the 🫨 Shaking Face, the 🪿 Goose, the 🪯 Khanda, and both a 🫸 Rightwards Pushing Hand and 🫷 Leftwards Pushing Hand. 🍎📲
This means that Apple has now joined Google and Samsung in providing support for late 2022's Emoji 15.0 list of recommendations across their various devices and platforms. 🍏🤖⚫
Additionally, Facebook recently began providing support for all of the 2022 emoji recommendations. Their designs for all the new additions can all be viewed on Emojipedia. 🆕📘
Also in this month's newsletter: researchers at the University of Tokyo delve into how emojis can be used to hide our emotions, the historically romantic nature of the classic ❤️ Red Heart is causing concerns about workplace communications, and Twitter's new press strategy involves a whole lot of 💩 Smiling Poop.

🍎 Apple iOS 16.4 Emoji Changelog
iOS 16.4 officially introduces 31 new emoji designs to Apple devices, including 🫨 Shaking Face, 🫎 Moose, 🪿 Goose, and of course the plain 🩷 Pink Heart.
The same 31 new emojis are also included as part of iPadOS 16.4, tvOS 16.4, watchOS 9.4, and macOS 13.3.
📘 Facebook Emoji 15.0 Changelog
The 31 emojis from the 2022 Emoji 15.0 recommendations are also now available for many users of Facebook and Facebook's Messenger platform, with rollout to further users across the globe expected in the coming weeks and months.

In their latest blog post the chairperson of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, Jennifer Daniel, gives their rundown of the new emojis now available across both iOS and Android platforms and suggests some playful ways in which they can be combined with other existing emojis. 🕛🪽

🎭 Scientists find that people use emojis to hide, as well as show, their feelings
Researchers from the University of Tokyo have investigated how users of the Simeji keyboard - the most-downloaded emoji keyboard in Japan - used emojis to both express and obscure their genuine emotions.
In this study, it was found that intense expressions of emotion came with matching emojis unless people felt the need to mask their true emotions, such as using the likes of a 🙂 Slightly Smiling Face to try to mask negative emotions.

Following a viral forum post, UK news platform Newsweek spoke to us here at Emojipedia about whether the incredibly popular ❤️ Red Heart emoji has clear-cut romantic connotations.
We posit that while historically associated with romantic love, the ❤️ Red Heart has become a more generalized, clearly positive response to the message of another, given its popularity across social media and its inclusion in many reaction-based features across the likes of Slack and Instagram.
🔬 Why science needs a protein emoji
This article in the renowned science journal Nature argues that emojis are a key part of a science communicator’s arsenal, and goes on to detail the Unicode emoji creation process while outlining why the author - computational chemist Andrew White - feels a protein emoji should be added to the emoji keyboard - perhaps alongside the existing 🧬 DNA emoji.
